Exhibition Statement

“But mind, the mountain’s magic-mad tonight,” the will-o’-the-wisp says on Walpurgis Night in Goethe’s Faust, quoted by the character of Settembrini in Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain. The observer who enters into Larsson’s secretive world feels a little like Mann’s Hans Castorp must have felt, who – in the strange surroundings of the mountain – experiences an inner turbulence of temper that he was not expecting.

Larsson calls upon the hero’s journey as the plot construction by imposing the role of protagonist in his story upon the observer of his exhibition – a cosmos filled with works that reference one another and thus create a cohesive space. A strange universe emerges in which the observer has to find his or her way around, similar to a journey into the unknown and unfamiliar.

Traveling per se is examined. Archaic ships, fantasized snow landscapes, and travel paraphernalia used for other purposes beckon enticingly. They suggest that normality, disagreeable or sober reality is being left behind in favor of a trip to a lofty unknown universe determined by unfathomable components such as chimeras and magical books. Using an eclectic approach, Larsson attempts to find holes in a globalized world where everything is standardized, by deconstructing what is established and rearranging it. All too familiar everyday objects are alienated, appear in a new form, and invite the observer to make an inventory. Placed in a new context where they can no longer be assigned to their original purpose, their alienation has no profit-oriented monetary value, but rather constructs a completely new type of contemplation, disengaged from conventions.

Popular pictures are changed using the technique of overpainting. Larsson sees no difference between a completed work and its process of origination. Everything flows and can be used in a different place for the first time or again. Constants and norms no longer apply. Magic knows no rules, it defies reality and blasts holes in the well-known form. New spaces emerge in the holes, far away from what is familiar. And these holes are worth visiting. From an historical perspective, empires always collapsed due to great expansion. Imperial overstretch. Larsson refers to these cracks in a still-functional system. Maybe he does not wish to put an end to it, but at least he offers alternative insights that reality does not provide. On Walpurgis Night, Faust becomes bewitched, just as Hans Castorp does on the magic mountain. Bo Christian Larsson’s exhibition a hole in the empire enables a place just as magical to be created, a place that conjures spaces between what we know well and – possibly – changes, even enchants, and releases the observer.
