Exhibition Statement

by Raimar Stange

Hinzu kommen u.a.

Doom. In music, it means excessive guitar riffs, weird distortions, slow tempos, and a dark atmosphere. Such an aesthetic frequently sets the tone for the pictures and installations of the Luxembourg artist Catherine Lorent, who represented her country at the 2013 Venice Biennale. In her art, Lorent combines a well-calculated conceptualism with wild expressivity, historicist styles with contemporary use of forms, and trashy elements with high culture – and does so in a surprising way.

The works at the exhibition “Relegation / Doom Spectrum” at Galerie Tore Suessbier include pieces from Lorent’s project “Relegation,” 2016. Four commercially available Gibson Explorer guitars are suspended in front of pictures, with each guitar connected to a sensor, so that they produce sounds triggered by the visitors. A drawing is also assigned to each guitar. The instrument therefore enters into a dialog with the artist’s expressive images, both with its sculptural form – it additionally functions as a readymade as practiced by Marcel Duchamp – and with the tones elicited from it.

Lorent’s “Relegation/Mood Spectrum” series, where the focus is on the moment of fate, also features in the exhibition. The four cardinal virtues of prudence, courage, justice, and temperance are presented graphically in combination with the four elements of fire, water, air, and earth. This time, the works center on intensely colored rainbows, which, for Lorent, symbolize the moment of (deceptive) fate. The artist herself says of these vinyl-format studies: “For me, it’s also about creation using the contrast between the high resolution of the pastel pigments and the sepia wash drawings. A next step would be to apply the corresponding sound to each respective album.”
