Exhibition Statement

Martin Werthmann, born in 1982, lives and works in Berlin. From 2004 to 2009 Werthmann studied fine arts at the HFBK Hamburg in the class of Andreas Slominski. He has also been a student of Wim Wenders, Fatih Akin and Daniel Richter.

The title of the exhibition “Mutual Accidents” serves as a source of multiple interpretations. It could be about an accident experienced either together or by two opposing parties, either as the perpetrator or as the victim, intentionally or unintentionally, collectively or mutually but not in unison, whereby the perception is individual in each case.

With regard to Werthmann’s works, many of the references for his large-format woodblock prints originate from car bombs, which can be seen as mutual accidents on two levels. As a singular and isolated event on the one hand, or as an event in a society, on the other.

The work Narathiwat II (2015) for example, refers directly to an attack in the Philippine province of Narathiwat in 2004.
